1 killed, 1 wounded in bar shooting near Seattle

(AP) ? A 30-year-old Seattle man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting at a crowded bar in Bellevue, Wash., early Monday, police said.

The shooting broke out just after 1 a.m. at Munchbar at Bellevue Square, an upscale shopping center about 10 miles east of Seattle, said Carla Iafrate, a spokeswoman for the Bellevue Police Department.

Police officers were outside the bar when gunfire erupted because a large crowd had gathered there, she said.

More than 600 people were inside the venue at the time of the shooting. "It was a very complicated scene," Iafrate said.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital. Iafrate did not immediately know his age or hometown.

The shooting appears to be an isolated incident. No one has been arrested, and investigators were trying to put together a description of the shooter, she said.

No officers were involved in the shooting.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, telling local media they dove for cover or hit the floor when they heard gunshots.

Award Winning Board Games from Peaceable Kingdom

My whole family enjoys playing board games. Playing board games with my younger grandchildren can be a bit challenging at times, because nobody likes to lose. I am so glad to have been introduced to the cooperative games from Peaceable Kingdom, because they are designed to promote cooperative play where everyone works together. I love that there are no temper tantrums or tears at the end of these games ? everyone is happy! My family received two award winning board games from Peaceable Kingdom to try out ? Race to the Treasure and Seeds for the Birds.

Award Winning Board Games by Peaceable Kingdom

Seeds for the Birds
Seeds for the Birds is a 2 ? 4 player game, geared for ages 3 and up. The goal of this game is to help Mama Bird feed her 3 little babies. No reading is required to play this game. There are three different cards with images, and each requires a different task. The seed card requires you to place the number of seeds pictured on a bird feeder. If it?s a bird card you?ll gather some seeds for the birds. You?ve gotta watch out for the squirrel cards ? squirrels love seeds too. Everyone works together to collect seeds for Mama Bird, and in the end it?s either Mama Bird or the Squirrels that win.

Award Winning Board Games by Peaceable Kingdom

The game is easily completed in 15 minutes, making it perfect for the short attention span of younger players. This game teaches counting, taking turns, following directions, shared decision-making, and cooperation. Like all Peaceable Kingdom games, everything inside Seeds for the Birds is 100% Green.

Race to the Treasure
Race to the Treasure is geared toward kids ages 5 and up, and takes 2 ? 4 players to play. In this game players work as a team to beat the Ogre to the treasure. It?s your job to make a path to the treasure, and along the way collect all 3 keys that will open the treasure?s locks ? all before the Ogre gets there. Players will be rolling dice and collecting game cards that will build a path to the treasure. Race to the Treasure even includes an Ogre snack which is kinda fun. Learning skill include: math grid concepts, strategy, shared decision-making, emotional development, and cooperation.

Both games are beautifully illustrated, and very engaging for young players.

Award Winning Games and Toys
This year?s Oppenheim Platinum Best Toy Award went to Seeds For The Birds ($15.99, for ages 3 and up) and Race To The Treasure ($15.99, for ages 5 and up). These two games are green, made of post-consumer recycled cardboard and printed with soy-based inks. Oppenheim Gold Best Toy Awards went to three adorable coop games: Willy?s Wiggly Web, Snug As A Bug In A Rug and Feed The Woozle (all three are $19.99 for ages 3 and up with leveled play and skill development for three ages groups). Willy?s Wiggly Web even appeared on the TODAY Show recently!

Grammar to the Rescue - The Chronicle of Higher Education

A recent article by Peg Tyre in The Atlantic described a very successful experiment in teaching writing at a high school on Staten Island. The story has an oddly conservative twist.

In subjects like English and history, New Dorp High School students were failing way too often on the essay parts of the Regents exams (a New York State graduation requirement). They could write a sentence or two but not a convincing and coherent paragraph.

Trying to figure out why, one teacher developed a quiz on coordinators (traditional grammar?s ?coordinating conjunctions?): and, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet. The surprising result was that many students seemed unable to use them effectively.

This led to a consideration of words like although, because, despite, if, since, unless, etc. These are traditionally called ?subordinating conjunctions? but more accurately treated as prepositions taking clause complements (see The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language, Chapter?7). An exercise on Of Mice and Men that involved completing a sentence that begins ?Although George ? ? drew some predictable sentences like Although George worked very hard, he could not attain the American Dream, but also answers like ?Although George and Lenny were friends.? Many students weren?t clear on the difference between an independent clause and a phrase containing a subordinate clause. They normally never used although, and hardly knew what it was for.

The article relates the relevant background from the recent history of teacher?training in America as follows:

Fifty years ago, elementary-school teachers taught the general rules of spelling and the structure of sentences. Later instruction focused on building solid paragraphs into full-blown essays. Some kids mastered it, but many did not. About 25 years ago, in an effort to enliven instruction and get more kids writing, schools of education began promoting a different approach. The popular thinking was that writing should be ?caught, not taught,? explains Stephen Graham, a professor of education instruction at Arizona State University. Roughly, it was supposed to work like this: Give students interesting creative-writing assignments; put that writing in a fun, social context in which kids share their work. Kids, the theory goes, will ?catch? what they need in order to be successful writers. Formal lessons in grammar, sentence structure, and essay-writing took a back seat to creative expression.

New Dorp decided to try going back to old ways. They brought in Judith Hochman, former head of a White Plains private school with a great record of teaching writing. Hochman?s students construct prose the old-fashioned way:

They are explicitly taught how to turn ideas into simple sentences, and how to construct complex sentences from simple ones ? . They are instructed on how to use appositive clauses to vary the way their sentences begin. Later on, they are taught how to recognize sentence fragments, how to pull the main idea from a paragraph, and how to form a main idea on their own.

The New Dorp teachers started revamping their whole curriculum under Hochman?s tutelage. Essay practice became a part of almost every subject. A chemistry lesson on hydrogen and oxygen would be followed up by getting the students to write sentences with subordinate clauses.

With although as the prompt, they had to construct something like ?Although hydrogen is explosive and oxygen supports combustion, a compound of them puts out fires.?

With the prompt unless: ?Unless hydrogen and oxygen form a compound, they are explosive and dangerous.?

Or given if: ?If hydrogen and oxygen form a compound, they lose their original properties of being explosive and supporting combustion.?

Comprehension of the subject matter improved dramatically under this regime. But the crucial thing is that writing in general also improved. Pass rates for the Regents tests in English and global history soared. The school?s dropout rate had been 40 percent in 2006, and it has fallen to 20 percent.

Apparently students? ability to write prose that looks literate and serious can be decisively improved through the perhaps unlikely strategy of explicitly drilling one or two dozen common words that function as attachment points for coordinate or subordinate finite clauses.

Perhaps the list of clause-taking prepositions could be lengthened a little (with given, lest, notwithstanding, provided, since, while, etc.), and maybe it would be useful to get students to try using a third class of useful words, the adverbs that function as connective adjuncts (however, moreover, nevertheless/nonetheless, therefore, though, thus, and so on).

I read about New Dorp with a special interest, of course, having just devoted a semester of undergraduate teaching at Brown University to a course on the grammatical description of English. Naturally I?m delighted by evidence of applied payoff for a subject that I think is of intrinsic interest anyway. I love the idea that good can come of teaching high-schoolers the functions of grammatically significant linking words?or even (since surely the students were vaguely acquainted with most of them already) just encouraging students to reflect on them and use them a little more. Grammar to the rescue!

Maybe everything looks like a nail to someone with a new hammer, but it left me thinking that those of us who teach undergraduates in universities, and especially those in schools of education, would do well to reflect on New Dorp?s story.

2nd person survived shooting with injury: cops

Connecticut state police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance provides an update on the investigation of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, telling reporters that two adult survivors who suffered gunshot wounds at the school are recovering.

By M. Alex Johnson and Becky Bratu, NBC News

Updated at 1:38 p.m. ET: Police said Monday that two adults were injured but survived the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut?and will be interviewed as soon as they're well enough to answer questions.

Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance confirmed that a second adult was injured and survived, saying both were wounded in the "lower extremities."?Initial reports last week suggested that only one person had been injured and survived.

In the meantime, authorities were interviewing other witnesses and analyzing the evidence found at the school and the shooter's home. Among the physical evidence was a computer believed to belong to the gunman that had been heavily damaged.

?There are many, many witnesses,? Vance said Monday, promising that any interviews with children would be handled "extremely delicately."

Authorities say Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother in the head multiple times Friday at their home in Newtown, Conn., before heading to the school, where he fired hundreds of rounds and died with hundreds more at his disposal. He killed 20 children and six women at the school, they said.

At a news conference in Hartford, the state capital,?Gov. Dan Malloy called for a statewide moment of silence and for churches to ring their bells on Friday precisely one week after the shootings.

Newtown begins burying 'little souls' lost in school slaughter

An explanation still hasn't emerged for why Lanza killed the 26 people at Sandy Hook.

Malloy appeared to open a window for speculation when he told NBC News on Sunday that Lanza attended Sandy Hook as a youngster. But Vance said Monday that police had discovered no connection between Lanza and the school. Earlier reports that his mother, Nancy, may have taught there also haven't borne out.?

The children ? 12 girls and eight boys, all of them 6 or 7 years old ? were shot as many as 11 times, authorities said. It appeared that Lanza had enough weapons and ammunition with him to have killed many more.

Obama reassures Newtown 'you are not alone' at vigil for victims of Connecticut school shootings

In addition to?an assault-style rifle and at least two handguns, he also had a shotgun in reserve in the car he drove to the school.?And when he was found, Lanza still had hundreds of rounds of ammunition in multiple magazines, after having already fired hundreds of rounds inside the school, where he killed himself with a gunshot to the head as emergency crews arrived.

Police said they were analyzing his the weaponry and checking out local gun ranges to learn whether he had ever been spotted at one of them.

Investigators had had high hopes that they could learn more from Lanza's computer, which was found at the home he shared with his mother. But law enforcement sources told NBC News' Pete Williams on Monday that the computer was heavily damaged and that its hard drive had been removed.

Conn. shooting suspect Adam Lanza's father: 'We too are asking why'

Police said Monday that they had had no previous contact with Lanza, and officials at?Western Connecticut State University in Danbury ? where Lanza enrolled at about 16 in 2008 ? said there was never any indication of trouble.

Malloy declined to say whether any documented evidence had been uncovered that Lanza might have been mentally disturbed.?But he said there were indications that Lanza had had a deeply troubled childhood.?

Lanza's parents were divorced, and he lived with his mother, who home-schooled him for part of his childhood, Malloy said.

Connecticut school shooter was 'very nervous around people'

"He never seemed to be a good fit," Malloy said. "It was a very difficult time for him and his mother."

Investigators have resolutely refused to go into detail about the timing of events Friday during official briefings. But investigators have told NBC News that Lanza first killed his mother, an avid gun enthusiast, with her own gun and then took multiple weapons with him as he drove to the school in her car.

To bypass security, Lanza smashed in a window, they said. He shot and killed Principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, and Mary Sherlach, 56, a school psychologist, before proceeding to a classroom, where he found the door locked.

So he moved on to a second classroom, where he killed everyone he found, before doing the same in a third classroom, investigators believe. He then shot himself.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

Although he was carrying three weapons, he used only one of them in all of the school killings ? a Bushmaster .223-caliber assault-style rifle similar to the one used by the snipers who terrorized the Washington, D.C., area in 2002. It was purchased legally, they said. He used one of the handguns to kill himself.

Authorities haven't said how Nancy Lanza stored the weapons.?

NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel ... - Business Insider

Turkish media is reporting that veteran journalist Richard Engel, NBC's chief foreign correspondent and Middle East bureau chief, and his Turkish colleague Aziz Akyava? are currently missing in Syria.?

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reports that Engel and Akyava? haven't been in contact with NBC News since Thursday morning.

John Cook of Gawker reports that NBC has been "asking every reporter who inquires about the report to participate in a news blackout," but the Turkish reports have already been referenced by journalists and others?thousands of times on Twitter.

Prominent investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill argues that NBC's news blackout should be respected, although the news has been picked up by outlets includling? The Daily Mail, The Houston Chronicle, and?The Atlantic Wire:

Turkish news channel NTV?notes that Turkish?journalists who have been arrested and detained in Syria do not have any information about the journalists' whereabouts.

[UPDATE 4:50 p.m.] John Cook at Gawker has published a response to readers wondering why Gawker?decided to publish their post against NBC News' wishes:

The rationale for the blackout was offered in off-the-record conversations, so I can't present their argument here. But I will say this: No one told me anything that indicated a specific, or even general, threat to Engel's safety. No one said, "If you report this, then we know, or suspect, that X, Y, or Z may happen." It was infinitely more vague and general than that.

As I wrote in the post, when the?New York Times?maintained a blackout about David Rohde, the rationale was clear: I was directly told that the?Times?had reason to believe that the people who had Rohde would harm him if news got out. There was nothing approaching that level of specificity or argumentation here. I would not have written a post if someone had told me that there was a reasonable or even remote suspicion that anything specific would happen if I wrote the post.

Also: There was in practice no blackout. Xinhua and Breitbart had published English language accounts. There were probably like 100 posts to Twitter per minute about him. This was a situation where the information was freely available on the internet, and in the region?these are large Turkish outlets reporting this information. It was out.

PFT: Suggs marries woman who accused him

Philadelphia Eagles v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

All through the week we do our best to bring you all the biggest injury news from around the league.

Inevitably, a few injuries fall through the cracks and don?t wind up with a spotlight on them at any point. That?s why we?ve got the injury report roundup every week to make sure that nothing makes it entirely through the net before the weekend starts.

Giants at Falcons

Cornerback Prince Amukamara (hamstring), running back Ahmad Bradshaw (knee,?foot), safety Kenny Phillips (knee) and safety Tyler Sash (hamstring) are all out for the Giants. Linebacker Michael Boley (back) is questionable and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks (knee) is probable. Falcons wide receiver Roddy White (knee) is going to be a game-time decision, as will safety William Moore (hamstring), defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (ribs) and wide receiver Harry Douglas (ribs).

Broncos at Ravens

The Broncos are relatively healthy. Guard Chris Kuper and linebacker Wesley Woodyard are both questionable with ankle injuries while wide receiver DeMaryius Thomas (shoulder) is probable to be in the lineup. Linebacker Jameel McClain (neck) is the only Raven ruled out and tight end Ed Dickson (knee) is doubtful, but they have several game-time decisions to make. Linebacker Terrell Suggs (biceps), safety Bernard Pollard (chest), linebacker Dannell Ellerbee (ankle), cornerback Jimmy Smith (abdomen), defensive end Pernell McPhee (thigh) and guard Marshal Yanda (ankle) are all questionable. Linebacker Ray Lewis (triceps) is practicing, but is not listed on the injury report since he is still on injured reserve.

Packers at Bears

The Packers will be without wide receiver Jordy Nelson (hamstring), safety Charles Woodson (collarbone), defensive end C.J. Wilson (knee) and running back James Starks (knee). Guard Josh Sitton is questionable after injuring his hip in practice on Thursday and linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring) is set to return after missing four games. Wide receiver Earl Bennett (concussion), cornerback Tim Jennings (shoulder) and linebacker Brian Urlacher (hamstring) are out again for the Bears. They could be thin on the defensive line as defensive tackle Henry Melton (chest) and defensive end Shea McClellin (knee) are doubtful for the game.

Redskins at Browns

If you?ve been here at any point this week, you know Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is going to be a game-time decision with a sprained knee. Linebacker London Fletcher (ankle) and tackle Trent Williams (thigh) are also questionable for Washington. The Browns have nine probable players, leaving them looking almost as fit as a fiddle for Sunday.

Colts at Texans

The Colts have ruled out running back Delone Carter (ankle), linebacker Kavell Conner (hamstring), tackle Winston Justice (biceps), center Samson Satele (ankle) and S Tom Zbikowski (knee) for their battle with the AFC South leaders. Texans linebacker Brooks Reed will miss another game with a groin injury and cornerback Alan Ball (foot) has also been ruled out.

Jaguars at Dolphins

It?s awfully lonely in the Jaguars backfield with running backs Rashad Jennings (concussion), Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) and Jordan Todman (calf) all ruled out. Jacksonville also ruled out cornerback?Aaron Ross (calf) and defensive end George Selvie (concussion) on Friday. Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess will miss a game for the first time in his career as a result of a back injury and linebacker Koa Misi (ankle) is out as well.

Buccaneers at Saints

Things are pretty healthy on the Tampa side of things with defensive end Da?Quan Bowers (hamstring) and cornerback LeQuan Lewis (knee) questionable and a few other probable players. The Saints are down right tackles Zach Strief (ankle) and Charles Brown (knee) this week. Running back Chris Ivory and safety Malcolm Jenkins will both miss the game with hamstring injuries.

Vikings at Rams

The Vikings have 10 probable players and just cornerback Antoine Winfield (knee) listed as questionable. That tops the Rams, who have nine probables and just defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo (foot).

Lions at Cardinals

Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley (shoulder) and tight end Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) are doubtful for the Lions. Safety Louis Delmas (knee) is questionable, as is Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell (calf). Wide receiver Early Doucet has been ruled out because of a concussion.

Seahawks at Bills

Wide receiver Sidney Rice (foot) is probable for the Seahawks, but cornerbacks Walter Thurmond and Marcus Trufant are both out with hamstring injuries. Center Eric Wood (knee) remains out for the Bills, while defensive end Mark Anderson (knee) is questionable in his attempt to return after several weeks on the sideline. Safety Jairus Byrd (shin), linebacker Nick Barnett (knee), defensive end Marcell Dareus (shoulder) and guard Andy Levitre (knee) are also questionable for Buffalo.

Panthers at Chargers

The Panthers will be without running back Jonathan Stewart (ankle) and wide receiver Brandon LaFell is questionable thanks to a toe injury. Linebacker DeMorrio Williams (ankle) is out for San Diego while running back Ronnie Brown (hamstring), linebacker Donald Butler (groin), tackle Jeromey Clary (knee) and guard Tyronne Green (ankle) are all doubtful.

Steelers at Cowboys

Tackle Willie Colon?s been ruled out by the Steelers and it?s thought his knee injury will end his season. Cornerback Ike Taylor (ankle) and tackle Mike Adams (ankle) have also been ruled out for Pittsburgh. Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff won?t play after having sports hernia surgery and wide receiver Dez Bryant is questionable with the finger injury we?ve been following all week. Bryant says he?s playing, as does linebacker DeMarcus Ware (elbow) but the outlook is a bit less certain for guard Nate Livings and cornerback Morris Claiborne because of concussions.

Chiefs at Raiders

The Chiefs haven?t placed wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (ribs) on injured reserve, so he?s been ruled out. Three offensive linemen ? tackle Branden Albert (back), guard Jon Asamoah (thumb) and guard Ryan Lilja (knee) ? are questionable while guard Russ Hochstein (back) is doubtful. Defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring, knee) could make his return for the Raiders after getting the questionable tag, a designation he shares with safety Tyvon Branch (neck, ankle).

49ers at Patriots

The 49ers travel across the country in good shape with just wide receiver Mario Manningham (shoulder) expected to miss the game after being listed as doubtful. The Patriots listed 19 players as questionable, including tight end Rob Gronkowski (forearm). Gronkowski isn?t expected to play and forecasting the status for the many questionable Patriots every week tends to be a waste of time.

Ordinary heart cells become 'biological pacemakers' with injection of single gene

Dec. 16, 2012 ? Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute researchers have reprogrammed ordinary heart cells to become exact replicas of highly specialized pacemaker cells by injecting a single gene (Tbx18)-a major step forward in the decade-long search for a biological therapy to correct erratic and failing heartbeats.

The advance will be published in the Jan 8 issue of Nature Biotechnology and also will be available on the journal's website.

"Although we and others have created primitive biological pacemakers before, this study is the first to show that a single gene can direct the conversion of heart muscle cells to genuine pacemaker cells. The new cells generated electrical impulses spontaneously and were indistinguishable from native pacemaker cells," said Hee Cheol Cho, PhD., a Heart Institute research scientist.

Pacemaker cells generate electrical activity that spreads to other heart cells in an orderly pattern to create rhythmic muscle contractions. If these cells go awry, the heart pumps erratically at best; patients healthy enough to undergo surgery often look to an electronic pacemaker as the only option for survival.

The heartbeat originates in the sinoatrial node (SAN) of the heart's right upper chamber, where pacemaker cells are clustered. Of the heart's 10 billion cells, fewer than 10,000 are pacemaker cells, often referred to as SAN cells. Once reprogrammed by the Tbx18 gene, the newly created pacemaker cells -- "induced SAN cells" or iSAN cells -- had all key features of native pacemakers and maintained their SAN-like characteristics even after the effects of the Tbx18 gene had faded.

But the Cedars-Sinai researchers, employing a virus engineered to carry a single gene (Tbx18) that plays a key role in embryonic pacemaker cell development, directly reprogrammed heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) to specialized pacemaker cells. The new cells took on the distinctive features and function of native pacemaker cells, both in lab cell reprogramming and in guinea pig studies.

Previous efforts to generate new pacemaker cells resulted in heart muscle cells that could beat on their own. Still, the modified cells were closer to ordinary muscle cells than to pacemaker cells. Other approaches employed embryonic stem cells to derive pacemaker cells. But, the risk of contaminating cancerous cells is a persistent hurdle to realizing a therapeutic potential with the embryonic stem cell-based approach. The new work, with astonishing simplicity, creates pacemaker cells that closely resemble the native ones free from the risk of cancer.

For his work on biological pacemaker technology, Cho, the article's last author, recently won the Louis N. and Arnold M. Katz Basic Research Prize, a young investigator award of the American Heart Association.

"This is the culmination of 10 years of work in our laboratory to build a biological pacemaker as an alternative to electronic pacing devices," said Eduardo Marb?n, MD, PhD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and Mark S. Siegel Family Professor, a pioneer in cardiac stem cell research. A clinical trial of Marb?n's stem cell therapy for heart attack patients recently found the experimental treatment helped damaged hearts regrow healthy muscle.

If subsequent research confirms and supports findings of the pacemaker cell studies, the researchers said they believe therapy might be administered by injecting Tbx18 into a patient's heart or by creating pacemaker cells in the laboratory and transplanting them into the heart. But additional studies of safety and effectiveness must be conducted before human clinical trials could begin.

Moon probes set for smashing end

NASA to guide gravity-seeking spacecraft into the side of a lunar cliff

By Alexandra Witze

Web edition: December 13, 2012

NASA?s twin GRAIL probes are on a crash course to hit the lunar surface on December 17.

The cosmic collision is intentional: Mission engineers need to guide the spacecraft down because they have run out of fuel to keep themselves in lunar orbit. Scientists will be watching until the very end, because how GRAIL hits may yield more discoveries about the moon.

GRAIL consists of two washing machine?sized probes named Ebb and Flow. Launched in September 2011, they arrived in January and completed their main task of mapping lunar gravity between March and May. GRAIL?s discoveries include the fact that the moon?s crust is thinner and more fractured by meteorite impacts than scientists had suspected (SN Online: 12/6/12).

But Ebb and Flow will meet their ends at 5:28 and 5:29 p.m. Eastern time on December 17. NASA will guide them at a very shallow angle into the side of a small mountain, part of the rim of an impact crater. The collision will take place in the dark, but far overhead the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter satellite will photograph the crash site before and after the event. By comparing those pictures, scientists will able to see how much of the mountain?s rock was broken up during the crash ? and know how intact the lunar crust is at that spot, says the mission?s chief scientist, MIT geophysicist Maria Zuber.

There?s even a small chance the crash will send up a puff of gases liberated from the crust during the impact. ?That would be very interesting,? says Zuber. In 1999, astronomers looked anxiously for such signs when the Lunar Prospector spacecraft deliberately crashed in a crater near the moon?s south pole. They saw nothing.

Ebb and Flow will hit about 20 seconds and 20 to 40 kilometers apart, at speeds of about 6,050 kilometers per hour.

Ghana opposition to contest poll results

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? Ghana's opposition party said Tuesday that they plan to contest the results of the recent presidential election, ignoring the appeals of the international community, which fears that a protracted political fight could destabilize one of the only established democracies in the region.

Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, the chairman of the New Patriotic Party, whose candidate lost last Friday's election, said that the party has widespread evidence of fraud. The results published by the election commission handed victory to incumbent President John Dramani Mahama with 50.7 percent of the vote.

"With the abundant evidence we have gathered, the (party) cannot therefore accept the declared results of the election," said Lamptey. "The party has instructed its legal team to file a petition in the supreme court."

The opposition said the widespread technical glitches that occurred with the biometric machines used to identify voters through their fingerprints created an opportunity for the ruling party to rig the vote. Officials were forced to extend voting into a second day in scores of polling stations due to the malfunctioning equipment, but despite the disorder caused by the delay, international observers say the vote was transparent overall.

Opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo came in second with 47.7 percent of the vote. He lost the 2008 presidential election by less than 1 percent, making his loss in this month's election ever more painful. Analysts say that this was the last chance for the 68-year-old career politician, the son of a former president of Ghana.

On Monday, the president of the African Union, Yayi Boni, made a point of stopping by Akufo-Addo's house to convince him to concede defeat in the interest of safeguarding Ghana's reputation for peace. Ghana, a nation of 25 million on Africa's western seaboard, remains one of the few established and stable democracies in the region, following the unexpected devolution of the Malian state, which until a coup eight months ago was also considered a model democracy.

The opposition held a rally attended by thousands of people in a roundabout in Accra. Party General-Secretary Kwadwo Owusi-Afriyie said: "We shall continue to protest on this ground until the results are changed."

He added that they had heard that the government plans to arrest party leaders and warned that "we would make the country ungovernable if they dared."

Akufo-Addo told The Associated Press in an interview on Monday that his party has compiled data from polling stations which they are comparing with the published results.

"All of the information we have, the primary data, the results of the polling stations are consistently not tallying with many of the declared results," said Akufo-Addo. "It would seem to be a serious case for saying that something has gone wrong," he said.

International observers from the African Union and the regional body, the Economic Community of West African States, have endorsed the election as free and fair.

"There were hiccups but not such that would grossly undermine the result of the election," said Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president and head of both observer missions.

Akufo-Addo countered that there were only 2,500 observers in the country for 26,000 polling stations and they could not check all stations for discrepancies.

Observers are concerned that Ghana's status as a model of democracy in West Africa could be compromised if the opposition challenges the results and calls for street protests. Thousands of riot police fanned out across the capital and the country ahead of Tuesday's announcement by the opposition, but despite the heightened security presence, the streets remained calm.

Ghana's former President Jerry John Rawlings said there is a need to look into the opposition's accusations of rigging. "Much as l am happy that President Mahama has won, the complaints that have been made must be taken seriously to make sure that everything is investigated," he said.

Customer Service Training: Learn How to Actively Listen | Business ...

Frequently, salespeople and service representatives become so focused on what they want to say about their product or service that they fail to actively listen to the customer. Not listening?and even worse not comprehending what is being said?is a surefire way to ruin the customer experience.

Employees with great active listening skills are able to quickly pinpoint customers? needs and desires, match needs and desires with the best product or service, and expertly guide them through the call.

What is Active Listening?

Active listening is a four-step process that teaches employees to focus on the caller, listen for key information, listen for key feelings, and clarify their understanding of what is being said.

Step 1: Focus on the customer.

To best serve and support customers, call center agents must learn to give callers 100% of their attention, from the start of the call to the end. Customer service training that includes active listening techniques will commonly suggest that employees imagine that they are sitting across from callers. This visualization method encourages employees to focus on what is being said by callers, and to pay attention to details like tone, word usage, and voice volume.

Step 2: Listen for key information.

Identifying key information is integral to providing great service and support. When an employee uses active listening skills to pinpoint customer desires, needs, and problems, average handle time decreases and customer satisfaction increases. Quickly highlighting the reason for the call allows the agent to progress through each call faster, which frees up time to handle a higher number of calls per day.

Step 3: Listen for key feelings.

Feelings are just as important as facts. When employees notice customer feelings it gives them clues as to how best they can handle the call. If a caller is upset or appears to be short on time, noticing this feeling will give the employee an advantage. When faced with a hurried customer, an agent can state the time required to complete a request so the caller knows exactly how much time they will need to dedicate to get the desired results. Using active listening skills to determine feelings is a proven way to provide personalized service and support that customers will appreciated.

Step 4: Clarify understanding.

Clarification of understanding is the final step successful active listening. To reinforce that caller desires, needs, problems have been heard and understood, employees can paraphrase the customer and ask a confirming question. For example, if a customer is having issues with a new laptop the agent could say, ?You said earlier that laptop turns off unexpectedly, but reboots ok ? is that correct?? Restating what a customer said reassures the customer that they have been heard and their request will be taken care of. Customer service training that incorporates active listening skills gives employees the tools they need to effectively hear and understand customers, and appropriately convey their understanding back to customers.

Benefits of Active Listening

The above steps will assist employees in building rapport with customers and quickly processing requests. When employees actively listen?customers will notice! Equipping agents with the tools to proactively serve and support customers will increase your center?s productivity, and increase revenue.

5 dead in California tribal shootings

PORTERVILLE, Calif. (AP) ? The church bell that rings out to announce the deaths of tribal members on the Tule River Indian Reservation tolled repeatedly Sunday after a man killed his daughter, his mother and her two brothers. Authorities said the suspect also died in a shootout with police.

Authorities cornered Hector Celaya, 31, on a country road in the middle of citrus orchards 30 miles away from the reservation and about six hours after the shootings Saturday night, that also left two of his other children wounded.

In the car with him were two daughters, 8-year-old Alyssa and 5-year-old Linea. One had life-threatening injuries; the other did not.

Authorities said Celaya was fatally wounded by deputies after he opened fire on them.

By Sunday night, authorities confirmed that Alyssa died of her injuries. Police said Celaya had a tattoo of her name on his right leg.

Authorities have not disclosed what motivated Celaya to kill his relatives, who lived in a travel trailer on a family compound on the reservation of about 800 people. But tribal members said the former custodian at the reservation's casino had a troubled past.

"He had a real hard life," said Rhoda Hunter, the tribal council secretary. "But all of us do, we all have a hard time. But we try not to let it get the best of us."

Hunter said that Celaya's mother was a friend of hers. The Tulare County sheriff's department, which is investigating the case, identified her 60-year-old Irene Celaya.

The killings stunned the tightknit tribal community.

"We've had a lot of deaths here, but nothing like this. Not murder. No, not murder," Hunter said.

The remote reservation relies on the Eagle Mountain Casino for revenues. Each tribal member receives $500 a month, but Hunter said most of the profit is invested into educational programs for the children.

The compound where the shooting took place is on a dirt road in a scenic canyon lined with oaks and sycamore trees. Herds of horses graze the hillsides, and modular houses sit on hilltops.

The 911 call came to the Tule River Indian Reservation fire department at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, said Shelby Charley Jr., an engineer and supervisor. He said his crew, which most often attends to people who fall ill at the casino, was shocked by the carnage.

"This is a once in a lifetime kind of deal," Charley said. "It's one of those calls you could go your whole career and not walk into. This is one of those calls that will stick with you for the rest of your life."

Charley said his crew immediately discovered a woman and man dead of gunshot wounds, then quickly discovered a young boy with critical wounds. Thick fog grounded helicopters in Fresno and Bakersfield, so rescue workers had to drive the gravely injured boy 40 minutes to the nearest hospital in Visalia.

Minutes later, sheriff's deputies found a third body in an outbuilding that had been set up as a makeshift bedroom. Authorities said the bodies of Irene Celaya and her 61-year-old brother Francisco Moreno were found in the trailer. The body of their 53-year-old brother, Bernard Franco, was in the shed.

The wounded boy was identified as Celaya's 6-year-old son, Andrew.

Deputies found Celaya by tracking his cellphone. A chase ensued, though Celaya never exceeded the speed limit and sometimes slowed to 15 mph, police said.

He eventually pulled over in a rural area deep in the heart of citrus country outside the tiny community of Lindsay, about 30 miles from the reservation. Celaya opened fire, prompting deputies to return fire, sheriff's spokeswoman Chris Douglass said.

She did not say how many shots were fired, but said Celaya fired his gun "multiple times." Celaya was shot during the exchange of gunfire, Douglass said. He died hours later at a hospital.

It was unclear when Celaya shot his daughters, Douglass said.

Police said Celaya was "known to law enforcement" and "known to use drugs," though Douglass could not provide details.

On the steps of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, Hunter said she has never known such tragedy. The church bell echoed through the reservation Sunday as news of each death made its way to tribal authorities.

"This is so horrible. We will be doing a lot of praying," Hunter said.

Syracuse studies health insurance opt-out option

SYRACUSE ? City officials will take a closer look at potential cost savings by offering some city workers incentives to opt out of the city?s health insurance program.

Finance Director Stephen Marshall outlined the general parameters of a potential opt-out option for city workers during a recent work session, suggesting the city could offer as much as $300 per month to employees as an incentive to some workers to not participate in the program.

He recommended the city council move forward with a review of the option so that it could start next year during the open enrollment season. The city currently has five full-time employees who opt out of the program because they are covered on a spouse or parent?s insurance plan, according to Marshall.

Marshall suggested the opt out ends up benefiting both the city in saved costs and the employee. He said it saves the city $11,651.52 per year, per employee, under the opt-out outline he presented.

As part of his presentation, Marshall showed what the opt-out option has done for Ogden, Salt Lake City and North Logan.

Marshall said the biggest single cost increase for municipalities each year is the rising cost of health care. He said Syracuse costs went up 5.4 percent during the current fiscal year, which is low in comparison to other communities.

It costs the city $1,270.96 per month to provide insurance for an employee.

There are issues the council would have to deal with before choosing to enact such an option, Marshall said. They include contract revisions and assumed costs, city liability under the new Affordable Care Act, what to do with current full-time employees not enrolled and when it would be best to implement a plan.
